islschedule – This victory also stopped Thailand’s ambition to record a hat-trick of AFF Cup titles after they won this tournament twice in a row. Vietnam last tasted the AFF Cup title in the 2018 edition.

Vietnam started the match very well. Only eight minutes had passed, they were already leading thanks to a tap-in from Pham Tuan Hai who utilized a long pass from Pham Xuan Manh. The ball that bounced on the field managed to trick the Thai defenders.

Although several additional opportunities emerged, especially from Nguyen Xuan Son who unfortunately missed, Vietnam continued to show early dominance. On the other hand, Thailand had difficulty penetrating Vietnam’s defense line even though they tried to control the game with the help of Supachok Sarachat and Suphanat Mueanta.

Thailand’s tight pressing tactics paid off in the 28th minute. After a Vietnamese player’s error in possession in front of the penalty box, Ben Davis managed to pounce on the loose ball and beat goalkeeper Nguyen Dinh Trieu with a low kick. The score changed to 1-1.

However, the situation became more difficult for Vietnam when Xuan Son was injured and had to be replaced by Nguyen Tien Linh. Thailand became more confident and continued to look for opportunities to score goals. They almost scored a second goal a few minutes later, but Mueanta’s effort was still thwarted by the Vietnamese goalkeeper.

Entering the second half, Thailand tried to increase the tempo of the game. They managed to score a second goal in the 64th minute through Supachok’s long-range shot. Despite protests from Vietnamese players asking for the ball to be returned to them, the VAR decision still validated the goal.

The situation turned around when Thailand lost Weerathep Ponphun, who was sent off by the referee after receiving a second yellow card. With only 10 players on the field, Thailand had to fight harder.

Vietnam did not waste the opportunity and managed to equalize in the 82nd minute through an own goal by Pansa Hemviboon who tried to block the ball in front of his own goal.

Despite losing one player, Thailand continued to try to pressure Vietnam. They almost scored through Suphanan Bureerat, but his shot hit the crossbar.

In the final seconds of the match, when Thai goalkeeper Patiwat Khammai stepped forward to welcome a corner kick, Vietnam made a quick counterattack. Nguyen Hai Long fired a shot from the middle of the field which resulted in a goal into an empty net. Thus, Vietnam closed the match with a 3-2 victory, and won the aggregate 5-3.

With this result, the Vietnam National Team was officially declared the champion of the 2024 AFF Cup, making new history in their football journey, while Thailand had to give up the title. Vietnam’s three goals were scored by Pham Tuan Hai, an own goal by Pansa Hemviboon, and Nguyen Hai Long, while Thailand scored goals through Ben Davis and Supachok Sarachat.

The result of this match changed the aggregate score to 5-3, giving Vietnam the advantage. Thus, the team nicknamed The Golden Stars is entitled to win the title for the third time.

First Half
Vietnam started the match very well. Tuan Hai managed to score a goal just eight minutes after kick-off, taking advantage of a mistake in the Thai Team’s back line.

Thailand tried to rise. Changsuek was able to equalize in the 28th minute, when Davis fired a hard shot from outside the penalty box that was beyond the reach of the Vietnamese goalkeeper, Nguyen Dinh Trieu.

However, a bad situation befell Vietnam in the 34th minute when their naturalized striker, Nguyen Xuan Son, had to be withdrawn due to injury and was replaced by Nguyen Tien Linh. The score remained 1-1 until halftime.

Second Half
After the break, Thailand appeared more aggressive and managed to turn things around through a long-range goal scored by Sarachat. This goal was controversial and protested by Vietnamese players, but was finally approved.

Thailand had to play with ten men after Weerathep Pomphan received a second yellow card in the 75th minute. With this situation, Vietnam took the opportunity to equalize the score to 2-2 through Hemviboon’s own goal in the 82nd minute, which made the aggregate score back in Vietnam’s favor at 4-3.

Thailand tried hard to press in the remaining time, but they failed to add another goal. In fact, towards the end of the match, they conceded another goal through Hai Long. Thus, the match ended with a score of 3-2 for Vietnam’s victory, which was officially declared the champion.
